“This, that, these and those”: Demonstratives

Shortcut: You can get away with never learning the demonstratives. Unfortunately, you do have to learn the rest of things in this book!

There are three kinds of demonstratives:

  • Near. E.g. “This is my dad”
  • Far. E.g. “That is my friend”
  • Something that was just referred to. E.g. “We’ll get fish from that lake” (when discussed earlier)

Demonstratives have to agree with the nouns they qualify, like in Spanish (“este gato”) or in German (“diese Katze”).

Rules for demonstratives:

  • Near demonstratives: h + vowel from concord + concord. E.g. So h + yu = huyu, h + i = hii.
  • Far demonstratives: concord + le. E.g. yule, ile.
  • Demonstratives of reference: h + concord + o. E.g. huyo, hilo.
