Preface

This is a guide to the grammar of Swahili (or Kiswahili), a Bantu language spoken in East Africa. It's presented as a guide for learners. It's not intended to be 100% comprehensive or an authoritative text — but rather a practical guide to get you through to an advanced intermediate stage of conversational fluency.

It's written by Dana Hooshmand, a polyglot and language learner who has studied Swahili in Tanzania and Kenya, and has used it in travel and social contexts, and has been edited by his Swahili teacher, Philip Omondi, who is a native Swahili speaker from Kenya.

Previously this guide was hosted on Discover Discomfort, a site about immersive language learning, rapid skill development, and travel to challenging places, including the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia, but is now being made available free through this site (with ad support in the future).
